Bautasten

Menhirs

At Bølshavn, some menhirs are situated, they are called Holy woman. The legend tells that a woman and her children were chased, she prayed to God to be saved, and she and her children were made to stone. It is or was superstition, that you have to greet Holy woman when you pass her.
I think that this kind of superstition has saved many old places like this from being destroyed.
The menhirs, we have a lot of them on Bornholm, are from late bronce age and early iron age, the meaning of them are more or less unknown.

Do you have any idea how magical it is for me to be sitting here in Vancouver WA USA and getting to visit your beautiful island? Thank you for another post sharing the beauty and mysterious island you live on.

It drives me crazy that the meaning of these stones have been lost to the ages.

TAK!
